The prosecution is advocating for the death penalty, characterizing the murder as a rarest of rare case due to the brutal nature of the crime, citing the 26 wounds inflicted on the doctor, 23 of which were stab wounds, and emphasizing that the act was committed while Dr. Das was performing her duties. The defense, however, has highlighted Sandeep's remorse and his dependents. Sandeep was convicted under eight sections of the IPC, including attempt to murder a police officer and obstruction of a public servant, as well as under the Healthcare Service Institutions Act, while the court rejected his insanity plea. The incident occurred on May 10, 2023, when Sandeep, brought to the hospital for examination, became violent and attacked hospital staff with surgical scissors.
