Thiruvananthapuram: The crime branch investigating the circumstances that led to the death of NCP leader Uzhavoor Vijayan plans to book a leader close to transport minister Thomas Chandy. Sulfikar Mayoori had threatened Uzhavoor over the phone in late July, just before the party leader swooned and was hospitalized, Manorama News had reported. Uzhavoor never recovered. He died at a hospital in Kochi on July 23.
Uzhavoor, the state president of the NCP, was perceived to be in the camp opposite to Chandy, who was picked to replace A.K. Saseendran in the cabinet after a honeytrapping scandal. Mayoori, the chairman of the State Agro Industries Corporation, called up Uzhavoor to warn him.
The crime branch is yet to record the statement of Chandy in connection with the case, preferring to get a questionnaire answered by his office. The crime branch report, which will soon be handed over to the government, recommends registering a case with Mayoori as an accused.
The crime branch also wants to send the recorded phone conversation for forensic examination.
Mayoori had refuted the charges against him and said that the sound in the audio clip was not his.
The crime branch report follows several complaints received by the chief minister and the director general of police after Manorama News broadcast the clip.
