Kochi: Thomas Chandy MLA has been elected as the state president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
At the state council meeting held in the presence of party national general secretary Praful Patel, A K Rajan of the Saseendran faction was chosen as the vice-president and Babu Karthikeyan of the Thomas Chandy group as the treasurer.
National secretary T P Peethambaran was holding the charge of the state president following the death of Uzhavoor Vijayan. The decision to make Thomas Chandy the state president was taken after he lost his ministerial post.
The new secretaries will be appointed within a week. Of the 41 members chosen for the executive committee, 24 belong to the Saseendran faction and 17 to the Thomas Chandy faction.
The selection of Thomas Chandy was unanimous, said Praful Patel, who was the observer.
T P Peethambaran chaired the state council meeting. Minister A K Saseendran, Thomas Chandy MLA, P K Rajan, Babu Karthikeyan, Dr C K Gurukkal, M Alikoya and Sanotoshkumar spoke.
Thomas Chandy said that after the Chengannur by-election more MLAs will join NCP. He, however, did not name anybody. He added that he will complete the talks that began during the tenure of the previous president.
