These special teachers visit homes of differently-abled kids for online lessons

Kanjiramkulam: Despite the threat posed by COVID-19, special educators under the 12 block resource centres (BRCs) in Thiruvananthapuram district reach the homes of differently-abled children with tabs to teach them online lessons.

For instance, a ten-year-old boy belonging to Kanjiramkulam who is suffering from cerebral palsy loves to watch animation videos but nobody in his house owns a smartphone or tab. He eagerly awaits the teacher from BRC, who fulfills the child’s needs. According to the child’s parents, he feels very sad when the teacher leaves.

There are, in fact, 705 differently-abled children under Neyyattinkara BRC alone and 44 of them lack online learning facilities at home. A majority of these youngsters are also bedridden. The special educators took up the noble task of visiting the children at home considering all these aspects.

Data reveals that over 6,000 differently-abled children live in the capital district. Though the authorities offer an online coaching programme called ‘White Board’ for these youngsters, around seven per cent are not benefited as they lack the necessary facilities. The special educators visit these students at home to fill this gap.

There are 20 special teachers under Neyyattinkara BRC.
