Daily COVID-19 cases may cross 50,000 soon in Kerala, 75/100 tested likely to be positive

Thiruvananthapuram: The current spread of COVID-19 in Kerala is such that it seems to be going out of control. Out of 100 people who are tested, 75 are likely to be found positive for COVID-19 soon. The number of cases that are detected daily is expected to cross the 50,000-mark as per the latest assessment by the Health Department.

The number of those who are seriously down with COVID-19 in the State is 891 as on Tuesday. The number of those who have been gripped with the disease for the second time is increasing. No beds are available in private hospitals in Thiruvananthapuram and several COVID-19 clusters were detected across the state.

The Test Positivity Rate (TPR) has crossed 40 in Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam districts. As per the projection report given by the Disaster Management Department, the daily number of COVID-19 cases would cross 37,000. By February second week, the number of cases will reach its peak.

With the increase in the total number of cases, there will be a corresponding spike in the number of serious cases.

Totally 28,481 new cases were reported in the state on Tuesday. Thus the Test Positivity Rate (TPR) soared to 35.3% after 80,740 samples were tested in the preceding 24 hours. With the latest cases, the tally of active cases reached 1,42,512 even as 7,303 recoveries were recorded on Tuesday.

Even as only 3.4% of the total cases are in hospitals, there were 944 fresh admissions on Tuesday.

Also, the total COVID-19-related fatalities crossed 51,000-mark after 39 deaths were reported on Tuesday. Moreover, 83 previously undocumented ones were made official by the state health department.

The Health Department has given instructions to the hospitals to increase the number of antigen tests and reduce the level of RT-PCR tests.

The spread of pandemic is expected to abate only by March.
