Kasaragod: Two workers reviewing the Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) on the Talapady-Chengala stretch of the NH 66 were killed when a truck rammed into their stationary pickup near Manjeshwar on Tuesday, said police.

The workers were identified as Raja Kumar Mahto (27), son of Arun Mahto, from Damodarpur Mahuli in Bihar's Samastipur district and Amit Damor Ganpat Bhai (25), son of Ganpat Meena, a native of Tokwasa in Rajasthan's Dungarpur district.

They were contract workers of Aarya, a Gujarat-based ITES company, contracted by the Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society (ULCCS) to install ATMS infrastructure on the 39-km Talapady-Chengala highway stretch. "The installation of the cameras and sensors was complete and they were conducting random checks before handing over the ATMS to us," said an executive of ULCCS.

The ATMS control centre for the stretch is located in Manjeshwar and will receive real-time feeds from the Video Incident Detection and Enforcement System (VIDES) and traffic sensors to monitor vehicle movement and detect accidents, enabling a prompt response.

The pickup belonging to Aarya ITES was parked on the side of the highway near a camera installation site. Raja and Amit were outside the vehicle, and a third worker was inside the van.

Around 6 pm, a spell of heavy rain reduced visibility and a truck heading towards Mangaluru crashed into the pickup, killing Amit and Raja on the spot, said police. The third worker inside the can escaped with minor injuries, said the ULCCS executive.
