20 from Tamil Nadu injured as tourist bus overturns in Idukki; elderly woman critical

Idukki: At least 20 people, including five children, were injured when a private mini tourist bus overturned at Vattakkannippara near Rajakkad, Idukki, around 5 pm on Wednesday. The driver, Manikandan (38), a native of Chennai, and Meera (70), one of the passengers, sustained serious injuries.
The passengers, all members of the same family from Chennai, Tamil Nadu, were on a trip to Idukki and were heading to Munnar and Vagamon when the accident happened. According to authorities, the bus (TN-96J-8218) was speeding when the driver lost control on a slope with a sharp bend. The vehicle struck an electric pole before toppling into a roadside ditch.
Local residents rushed to the spot after hearing the crash and carried out the initial rescue operations. Fire and Rescue teams from Adimali and Nedunkandam, along with police officials from Shantanpara and Udumbanchola, soon arrived and joined the efforts.
“The injured were taken to a private hospital in Udumbanchola in ambulances and private vehicles. A woman, Meera, sustained severe arm injuries and is in critical condition,” District Panchayat Vice President Usha told Onmanorama.
Others suffered fractures and bruises. Udumbanchola police began an investigation into the incident.
On April 13, 2024, another mini-bus accident happened at the same bend, claiming the lives of a 10-year-old girl and her mother.
