Paravoor temple theft is a growing concern as a series of robberies targeting religious places have been reported in Paravoor, Ernakulam, over the past year.

Paravoor: A series of thefts targeting places of worship have been reported from Paravoor in Ernakulam district over the past one year. In the latest incident, all ‘pooja’ items were stolen from Vadappalliparambu Pemmariyamman Temple at Perumbadanna by the robbers after breaking open the door of the storeroom early on Sunday.

Utensils, pots and a ‘para’ used for the rituals costing over Rs one lakh have been lost, said temple authorities.  The police have launched an investigation, they added.

Incidentally, this is the third robbery occurring in the temple over the past 12 months. “Even though traditional lamps and ‘pooja’ items were stolen in the earlier incidents also, the police are yet to trace the culprits,” said an office-bearer of the temple’s administrative committee.

Another robbery took place at Kalarikkal Devi Temple at Chittattukara last week where the thief cut the lock of the storeroom behind the stage and took away a brass ‘thattu vilakku’ (a traditional lamp having several levels).

A few days earlier, thieves had broken the offering boxes at Kovilakam Holy Cross Church at Kottayil, Chendamangalam and stolen the money.

Residents of the area have demanded strict night patrolling by the police to prevent the frequent robberies at religious places.
