Kasaragod: The young parents of a one-year-old boy ended their lives in Kasaragod's Manjeshwar panchayat on Monday evening. The deceased have been identified as Ajith (30) and Shwetha (27) of Kadambar village in Arimala ward. Ajith worked as a house painter and pandal decorator, while Shwetha was a teacher at a private school in Vorkady.

According to the police, the couple left their son with Shwetha’s sister at Bandiyod in neighbouring Mangalpady panchayat on Monday evening, saying they had to go somewhere. They then returned home and consumed poison around 5 pm.

Ajith’s mother, Prameela (60), who works at a juice shop, was not at home at the time.

Neighbours, who heard a commotion from the house, rushed in and found the couple in distress. They were taken to KS Hegde Hospital in Deralakatte, Mangaluru. Ajith died around 12.30 am, and Shwetha succumbed by daybreak on Tuesday.

Arimala ward member Jayanthi Yatish said a financial crisis might have driven them to the act, though police have not yet confirmed this. "Our officers have gone to the hospital to conduct the inquest," said Manjeshwar police.

Ajith’s brother-in-law said he was aware of only one loan, taken from a cooperative bank for a family need. "That loan was being repaid every month without default by Ajith, his sister, and mother," he said.
