Punnayoorkulam: Puncha (third paddy crop), which is one of the three rice – growing seasons in Kerala, has begun at the cole fields in Punnayoorkulam. The pumping at the fields was inaugurated by district panchayat member Raheem Veetiparambil and panchayat president Jasmine Shahir. Agriculture officer Nouma Noushadali, Padavu officials Kunnakattil Abubacker, MT Abdul Jabbar, S Shaseendran, Shukkoor Korothayil and PK Vinod spoke at the event. 

Pumping has first begun in the Paroor cole fields in the area. Meanwhile, free electricity connection was ensured in the area the other day. Pump sets of 50 and 30 HP are used in the main field while a 50 HP set has been installed in Ponnukkaran field. Manchira field also got a pump set of 50 HP power. Earlier, petti – para was used for pumping while today submersible pumps are used in the fields. 

Meanwhile, pumping would begin in the nearby fields by next week. Farming is done in 800 acres in the Paroor fields. Besides, 150 acres in Kapliyangad Thazhathu too will be farmed during this season. According to the recently published agriculture calendar, the sowing would be completed by the end of November and the harvest of the puncha crops is expected in the months of March and April.
