Kottayam: A 65-year-old man and his 35-year-old son were found dead inside their house at Manjukkulam in Elikkulam, Kottayam, on Saturday. The deceased have been identified as M N Thankachan and his son Akhil.

According to Ponkunnam police, both were found hanging inside their home — Thankachan in the drawing room and Akhil in a bedroom just behind it.

“Thankachan and Akhil lived alone. For the past two days, neighbours thought they were away as they hadn’t been seen outside. On Saturday morning, a neighbour noticed the front door slightly open and, on looking inside, saw one of them hanging. She immediately informed others, who then alerted the police,” said Sherly Anthyamkulam, Pothukam ward member.

The Ponkunnam police reached the spot around 12.30 pm and confirmed the deaths. “Both were daily wage workers and lived alone. The reason behind their deaths is yet to be ascertained,” said an officer from the Ponkunnam police station.

A case under Section 194 (unnatural death) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) was registered. The inquest proceedings have been completed, and the autopsy will be conducted at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kottayam.

Sherly Anthyamkulam said Akhil was unmarried and that Thankachan’s wife, Suja, had recently moved in with her mother. “Both father and son were known to consume alcohol, but never caused any trouble in the neighbourhood,” she added.
