Idukki: Massive rock boulders lying dangerously close to the Alappuzha–Madurai road at Mundanmudi Purayidam City have become a serious threat to motorists.
The rocks obstruct visibility along the sharp curves and steep slopes of the stretch, making it difficult for vehicles coming from opposite directions to see each other in time. As a result, accidents have become increasingly common in the area.
The road winds around a large rock situated at its centre, further adding to the danger. Despite repeated accidents and numerous petitions from local residents urging the removal of the boulders, authorities have yet to take any action.
In the Purayidam City area, the situation is further worsened by partially functional streetlights and deep gorges flanking the road, adding to the potential danger.
According to residents, several mishaps have already occurred along this treacherous curve. They also point out that the stretch between Purayidam City and Kallippara is dotted with large boulders and trees, heightening the risk of accidents.
Both locals and motorists are now urging the authorities to pay urgent attention to this perilous stretch. Their key demand is to remove the roadside boulders through controlled blasting to ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians.
