Angamaly: Yellis Areeckal, a higher secondary student of St Patrick's Academy, is still brimming with excitement after her recent visit to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
Having returned with a wealth of new insights into the world of stars and space science, Yellis describes the trip as truly eye-opening. The visit, arranged to introduce students to the fast-expanding career prospects in space engineering, was undertaken by a study group from Thrissur following an invitation extended to the school.
Yellis says witnessing NASA's cutting-edge projects and learning about space studies, aviation engineering, and design was an unforgettable experience. A highlight of the trip was the interaction with astronaut Mark Kelly, a veteran of Space Shuttle missions who has carried out four spacewalks. He and other astronauts shared first-hand accounts of their time in space with the students.
The programme included watching a rocket launch, touring research laboratories, and attending classes led by prominent scientists and astronauts. Students also visited several major facilities, including the Rocket Garden, Space Launch Complex, Hyper Deck, Space Shuttle exhibits, the Saturn Centre, and the John F Kennedy Space Centre.
The 10-day tour of the United States also featured a visit to Florida University. Yellis returned with a training certificate from NASA in recognition of her active participation and strong performance in the Space Study Programme.
