Shreyas Iyer has asked the BCCI not to consider him for the home Test series against the West Indies. The star batter, who was not picked for India’s ongoing Asia Cup campaign in the UAE, informed the chairman of selectors, Ajit Agarkar, that he cannot take the rigours of red-ball cricket due to a stiff back.
Iyer had been named captain of India A for the ongoing four-day unofficial Test against Australia A in Lucknow, but he pulled out.
According to reports, Iyer had informed the team management that he was wanted in Mumbai for personal reasons. Dhruv Jurel was named captain of India A in Iyer’s absence.
According to news agency PTI, Iyer will head to the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for further evaluation of his back and to complete his recovery.
The Windies play two Test matches in India, starting October 2. Iyer is also likely to miss the start of the Ranji Trophy season in mid-October.
