IPL sensation Vignesh Puthur made his senior Kerala debut against Chhattisgarh in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy in Lucknow on Sunday.
The left-arm spinner received his maiden Kerala cap from captain Sanju Samson. Prasanth Padmanabhan, chairman of the KCA selection committee, and a former left-arm spinner himself, was present during the ceremony.
Puthur, aged 24, became an overnight star with the Mumbai Indians, who scouted him from a club game and took him to the IPL last season. The spinner from Perinthalmanna in Malappuram made a memorable IPL debut, claiming three wickets against the Chennai Super Kings.
Against Chhattisgarh, Puthur was introduced in the eighth over, with skipper Amandeep Khare and Sanjeet Desai in the middle. He bowled a tidy debut over, giving away just four singles, to earn the appreciation of captain Sanju, keeping the wickets.
Puthur finished on 2/29, with the wickets of Ajay Mandal and P M Yadav. Before that, he played a part in Chhattisgarh's first wicket, taking the catch at backward point to remove Ayush Pandey off N M Sharafuddeen's bowling.
Though Puthur had featured for Kerala at U-14, U-19 and U-23 levels, he could not break into the Ranji Trophy squad despite his breakthrough season in IPL. The Kerala management should be hoping he makes an impact in the T20 tournament.
