Asian Games: Swapna Barman clinches gold in heptathlon

Jakarta: Triple jumper Arpinder Singh and heptathlete Swapna Barman won gold medals, while Dutee Chand picked up another silver at the Asian Games here on Wednesday.

Arpinder clinched the gold with an effort of 16.77m in his third attempt at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium. Uzbekistan’s Ruslan Kurbanov won the silver with a personal best of 16.62, while Shu Cao of China took the bronze (16.56m).

Keralite Rakesh Babu ended sixth with a jump of 16.4 m.

Swapna reigned supreme in women's heptathlon by aggregating 6026 points. Her teammmate Purnima Hembram (5,837 points) finished fourth.

The 22-year-old Swapna had won the gold in the last Asian Championships at Bhubaneswar too.

Dutee dazzles

Dutee added the 200m silver to her kitty after pocketing sliver in 100m dash.

The 22-year-old from Odisha clocked 23.20 seconds to finish behind Bahrain’s Edidiong Odiong (22.96). China’s Yongli Wei won the bronze with a time of 23.27.

In fact it was a repeat show of the 100m dash on Sunday as all three had secured the medals in exactly the same order.

India have so far won five gold medals and nine silver in athletics this edition.

Manjit, Jinson qualify

Manjit Singh, who pulled off an upset win in the 800m, ran a tactical race for the second day running to qualify for the 1,500 final by topping his heat in 3:50.59 min.

Keralite Jinson Johnson, who had to settle for a silver in 800m behind Manjit, also qualified for the final by finishing second in heat 2 with a time of 3:46.50 min. Qatar’s Mohammed Tiaouli (3:46.40) topped the heat.

Japan’s Yuki Koike won a thrilling 200m race edging Chinese Taipei’s Yang Chun-han in a photo-finish. Both clocked a personal best 20.23 seconds.
