This year's Malarikkal water lily tourism season, which began on May 15, will conclude after 144 days on October 5. The season is wrapping up, promising many new attractions for the coming years. For instance, authorities plan to install solar lights in the area, allowing tourists to enjoy the flowers from their blooming time, even around midnight.

A plan is also underway to establish a bird sanctuary, which will help tourists enjoy the sights of the numerous migratory birds that frequent the area, especially during the water lily season. The Kottayam-based Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) is set to conduct a study on the number of birds that visit the area. "Birds visit the area most in the mornings and evenings. There are many migratory birds here like 'Veliru' (Indian Roller), Chakkala (Jacobin Cuckkoo) and Eranda (Lesser Whistling Duck), alongside the ever-present cranes," says Malarikkal Tourism Society President VK Shajimon.

Apparently, around two or three years ago, the area also hosted a 'Vananadatham' (jungle walk) programme to introduce ornithology enthusiasts to the many birds here. "There is a two-acre private property here named 'Venkadam' with a highly forested aura. It's also a popular spot for many birds and is beautifully situated between a stream and a picturesque stretch of land. From next year, we want to use its potential too to entertain tourists," says Shajimon.

Honeymoon destination
For the past few years, the area has been a hot favourite among couples for wedding photoshoots and 'Save The Date' shoots. Shajimon also launched a honeymoon package at a homestay he owns here, a while ago. "When a visiting couple asked about the possibility of a photoshoot in the backdrop of the lilies, we set up a stage amid the field with a 360-degree view of the flowers. The photos and videos will only be out after their wedding next month, but we feel similar arrangements can easily be made for other tourists too from next season," he adds.
