Kerala's first railway coach restaurant opens in Payyanur, meals 30 per cent cheaper

Kerala's Payyanur is all set to welcome food lovers to the state's very first railway coach restaurant. Named Juju Express, this unique dining spot located right outside the Payyanur railway station is opening today. The novel venture marks a major milestone for the region's culinary tourism scene.

A budget-friendly culinary journey
What sets Juju Express apart from standard restaurants is its attractive pricing strategy. The operators have revealed that the food will be served at railway-approved rates, which are roughly 30 per cent cheaper than typical local eateries. The extensive menu boasts over 90 items, starting from a comforting traditional fish curry meals priced at just ₹60 to the premium Juju special creamy alfahm at ₹580.

Whether you are craving local Malabar delicacies, popular North Indian specialities, or Chinese dishes, this round-the-clock diner has something to satisfy every palate. Breakfast service begins early at 5 am, serving hot idlis, vadas, and dosas to early-morning commuters and travellers.

From a train coach to a cosy diner
The restaurant has been cleverly fashioned out of a decommissioned three-tier AC coach brought in from Mangaluru. This coach has been mounted on a specially constructed track along Ramanthali Road, just outside the station gates. Step inside, and you will find a beautifully renovated, air-conditioned dining hall that can comfortably seat 50 guests. For those who prefer outdoor dining, the developers have built an adjacent platform-themed seating area that accommodates an additional 30 people. The facility also features a state-of-the-art kitchen, alongside dedicated counters for tea, fresh juices, and ice creams, making it a perfect 24-hour pitstop for passengers and locals alike.
