Thrikkakara: Many of us have seen the proceedings at the United Nations on television. A mock UN meet, named MEC MUN 2018, will be held here on October 6 and 7 where youth in the guise of diplomats will be engaged in debates over burning global issues as is done at the real organisation in New York.
The Government Model Engineering College (MEC) here will be hosting its second edition of the unique event modelled on the global body in association with the United Youth Circuit and Excel 2018, the college body that holds its annual techno-managerial festival. The United Youth Circuit is a worldwide gathering of youth who champion world peace through global partnership.
MUN, which stands for Model United Nations, is an academic simulation of the United Nations. It offers a platform for students from all backgrounds to don the role of delegates of various countries and debate on various global issues.
“Settings such as MUNs provide a platform to give out their opinions on various social and political issues which otherwise are generally avoided as a topic of discussion” said Jishnu Nair, general secretary, MEC MUN 2018.
The UN is an intergovernmental organisation that aims to promote international cooperation and to create and maintain international order. Its six main committees, includes the one dealing with disarmament and international security (DISE) and the one on economic and financial affairs.
The UN's principal organs are the General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council, Trusteeship Council. International Court of Justice and its Secretariat. Often, the meetings at the first two bodies are beamed on TVs. It is the UN Security Council which is charged with the maintenance of international peace and security.
The mock Security Council at MEC MUN will discuss on the maintenance of international peace and security and also will have a comprehensive review of the situations in the Middle East and North Africa. The agenda of the model committee on DISE issues will be the "Establishment of a Nuclear Weapon Free Zone in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Region".
