Alappuzha: Malayalam actress Manju Warrier visited relief camps in Kuttanad, one of the worst-affected in the torrential rain that wreaked havoc in the state last week. She distributed fresh clothes and other materials to those affected.
Manju said that the situation in Kuttanad was graver than she had imagined. “It is our duty to help the people here and I have tried to do my bit,” she said.
The versatile actress reached Kuttanad to join Malayala Manorama’s 'Koodeyundu Nadu' relief project which offers support to flood-affected people in Kuttanad.
Kuttanad was the location for many movies in which Manju acted, but only now did she realize how floods could ravage the beautiful natural landscape.
Offering some relief to the victims, especially women, Manju handed over items worth around Rs 1.25 lakh. The items included clothes for women, vegetables and grocery.
Manju and her team started from Alappuzha by noon and visited several camps at Kainakary and Pulinkunnu panchayats to distribute the materials. Inmates recounted their woeful tales to the actress. Manju also visited a community kitchen.
The torrential rain had claimed 49 lives since July 9, in the second phase of the southwest monsoon, and nearly 1.10 lakh people were still staying in 486 make-shift relief camps mostly in worst-affected Alappuzha, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta districts.
