Palakkad: The fury of rain has thrown life out of gear in Palakkad. Families have been rendered homeless and many people have been displaced.

Radhakrishnan has lost his house at Shankhuvarathode Colony at Chunnambuthara just 10 days short of his wedding. He left his house along with his mother and siblings as their modest dwelling was flooded. The house seems to be beyond repair.

“This was supposed to be a happy home,” said Radhakrishnan’s younger brother Krishna Kumar. “My brother is to get married on August 26. He was to lead his wife to this same house. Everything is gone. We do not know what to do.”

The tragedy could not have come at a worst time for the family. One of the brothers, Rajesh Kumar, has been admitted to the Thrissur Medical College Hospital after an illness. His mother was taking care of him in the hospital when she learned that their house has been flooded.

On Tuesday, the house fell apart.

Krishna Kumar, who runs a motorcycle workshop at Chunnambuthara, was one of the many people who were affected by the flood. He was still shivering with fear when he went to the bureaucrats visited the area to assess the damages.

“The wedding will happen as planned. We have to rent a house for the newlyweds. We will also move there. We have no other option,” he said.

The colony’s misery preceded the rain. The inhabitants of the colony found themselves locked in with the construction of a railway underpass. The authorities are yet to arrange an alternative access to them.
