Vasanthakumar was the 'daredevil' of 85th Battalion

Pulwama-Attack
Vasanthakumar came face-to-face with death at Bijapur in Chhattisgarh when they were targeted by Maoists

Kalpatta: Martyred CRPF jawan from Kerala VV Vasanthakumar had a providential escape from the clutches of death in November last year in Chhattisgarh. But at Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir, luck did not help him. He was one of the 40 CRPF personnel killed in the suicide bomber attack on their bus last week.

Vasanthakumar came face-to-face with death at Bijapur in Chhattisgarh when they were targeted by Maoists. Six of his colleagues were injured in the attack. Some of them recollect how Vasanthakumar took a seriously injured Lakshman Rao to safety.

The convoy in rebel-infested Bijapur was attacked with a land mine. Lakshman Rao hit on the leg. Vasanthakumar took Rao to a safe place evading mine traps all around. After this, he was called Daredevil in the 85th Battalion. He was also promoted as Havildar.

Wife to get permanent job

Vasanthakumar’s wife Sheena is employed with the veterinary university as a temporary staff. Her job will be made permanent, minister AK Balan said. An official order will be issued soon. Sheena is a temporary employee at the Pookode Veterinary University, Wayanad, now. Vasanthakumar’s mother is a MGNREGA worker.

A decision on financial aid and support to the children’s education will also be taken soon.

Minister AK Balan visited Vasanthakumar’s family and assured that Vasanthakumar's wife's job will be made permanent

Vasanthakumar, who used to call home daily, made his last call on Thursday. ‘It’s snowing here, will call later’, was his last message. A Tamil colleague called later in the night only to say ‘we couldn’t save him’.
