Vismaya case: SC grants bail to husband Kiran Kumar

New Delhi: Kiran Kumar, husband of Vismaya V Nair who took her own life in June 2021 over dowry harassment, has been granted bail by the Supreme Court. 

The bail plea was allowed as the trial in the case has reached the lap at the Judicial First-Class Magistrate Court at Sasthamcotta in Kollam district.

Kiran who was remanded in custody by the local court earlier has been lodged in the Kottarakkara sub-jail ever since his arrest a year ago.

Vismaya was found hanging in the bathroom of her husband S Kiran Kumar's house at Sasthamkotta in Kollam district on June 21, 2021 after they tied the knot on May 31, 2020.

Kumar was arrested later on a complaint by her parents and brother, alleging that he had tortured and harassed her over dowry.

Kumar, the former Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspector was dismissed from service as per the Kerala Civil Service Rules, 1960 following the incident.

A day before the incident, Vismaya had sent WhatsApp messages to her relatives over the alleged harassment by Kumar over dowry, as well as photos of wounds and marks of beatings on her body.

Her father told a TV channel that 100 sovereigns of gold and over one acre land, besides a Rs 10 lakh worth car were given as dowry to Kumar during the wedding in 2020. But Kumar did not like the car and wanted Rs 10 lakh in cash.

When the family refused, he tortured her, the woman's father had said.
