Cheruvathoor: The Ramanchira Bridge, one of the district’s major bridges with three approach roads, is slated to be inaugurated on Kerala Formation Day. Its completion will also pave the way for constructing bypass roads parallel to the National Highway.
The Kayyur–Cheruvathoor Coastal Road, expected to significantly boost the tourism potential of the region, will also become a reality with the bridge's opening.
Built at a cost of ₹16 crore, the bridge spans the Ramanchira Lake, a key habitat for migratory birds, and fulfils a long-standing demand of local residents. The eastern approach road connects to the Nappachal area in Kayyur–Cheemeni panchayat, from where vehicles can join the Cheruvathoor–Kayyur road. This will allow commuters from the Kayyur area to access the National Highway beneath the Veeramala Hill without passing through Cheruvathoor town.
Similarly, vehicles entering the bridge’s approach road that winds through the valley of Veeramala Hill can reach Kinanoor–Karinthalam panchayat via the coastal road, bypassing Neeleshwaram.
A drive along the coastal road offers travellers stunning views of the Thejaswini River as well as the Palayi Shutter-cum-Bridge. Once opened, the bridge is expected to give a fresh lease of life to the district’s tourism sector. At present, only the tarring work on the bridge remains to be completed.
As the rainy season continues without a break now, officials plan to begin tarring by October so the bridge can be inaugurated on Kerala Formation Day.
