Thodupuzha: A man who befriended a woman through a matrimonial site and lured her with a false promise of marriage allegedly stole her gold chain. Thodupuzha police arrested the accused Karthik Raj, a native of Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu.
According to police, the incident took place on August 5. The complainant, a Tamil herself, had befriended Karthik through a matrimonial platform. Introducing himself as Abhilash and claiming to be a doctor, he proposed to her and soon travelled to Thodupuzha to meet her.
As part of his deception, he gifted the woman a fake gold chain, convincing her that it weighed five sovereigns. Later, he asked her to hand over the two-sovereign gold chain she was wearing, assuring her that he would return it before leaving. The two then visited a textile shop in Thodupuzha, where Karthik allegedly distracted the woman and escaped with the ornament.
Based on the woman’s complaint, police launched an investigation and tracked him to Namakkal in Tamil Nadu, where he was arrested in a dramatic operation.

Investigations revealed that Karthik has been involved in similar fraud cases in Tamil Nadu, where local police are also probing complaints. Authorities suspect he used the money from these thefts for online gambling.
The accused was produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody. Police confirmed that he would be handed over to Tamil Nadu police if requested for further investigation.
