Mayippadi: Local residents here intercepted a truck attempting to dump waste into abandoned granite quarries in the region. The incident took place at Sidhavayal near Ananthapuram the other day.
The truck, loaded with garbage packed in plastic sacks, had already disposed of a few sacks into the quarry when locals rushed to the spot in protest. By then, those inside the vehicle had fled the scene.
The residents immediately alerted the police. A team led by SI K Sreejesh arrived and moved the truck to the police station. Locals alleged that the practice of dumping garbage in abandoned granite quarries under the cover of night has become rampant in the area.
