Kasaragod: As booth-level officers (BLOs) across Kerala boycotted duties on Monday to protest the suicide of a Kannur BLO, another officer in Kasaragod collapsed while on fieldwork.
Sreeja M (45), an anganwadi worker who also serves as the BLO for Booth No. 124 in the Kanhangad Assembly constituency, collapsed during house visits connected to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll. She works at the anganwadi in Malom Maikkayam in Balal grama panchayat.
Despite the statewide protest following the death of Ettukudukka BLO Aneesh George on Sunday -- an incident widely linked to severe work pressure -- Sreeja stepped out to distribute a few more enumeration forms in her neighbourhood, said Vellarikkundu tehsildar V Murali. By mid-morning, exhausted in the heat, she collapsed.
She was first rushed to a private hospital in Konnakkad and later shifted to the Vellarikkundu Block Family Health Centre, where she received IV fluids. “Her ECG is normal, her vitals are stable, and she will be discharged soon,” said the official who called on her at the hospital. The Village Officer and other revenue officials also visited her at the hospital.
Sreeja’s collapse comes less than 24 hours after the death of Aneesh George, whose suicide has ignited statewide protests and renewed scrutiny of the mounting workload on BLOs during the revision drive.
Political parties have called on State Electoral Officer Rathan U Kelkar to delay the intensive revision of the assembly election voters’ list till the local body elections conclude in December.
