Of late, social media has been abuzz with the news of a teenager who turned a sensation online overnight with her sweet voice and sensitive rendition. She has finally made her appearance. “My name is Soumya, home is in Chennai, I love Malayalam a lot,” she told Vanitha online.
The girl, whose rendition of the 'Theevandi' song 'Jeevamshamay thaane..neeyennil kalangal munne vannu' became a repeat-mode rage on social media, said she is fond of Malayalam though she is settled in Chennai and native place is Karnataka. "Please do not brand me as a Tamilian. I'm a Malayali emotionally too. Yesudas sir is my favourite singer and 'Anuraga vilochananayi' from 'Neelathamara' is my favourite song," she noted.
Although not a native, Soumya's rendition and diction of Malayalam words are perfect to the core. "Those who heard the song have taken me for an original Malayali,” she revealed. “My life too is like music. It's just flying beyond borders. My mother tongue is Kannada, my family is settled in Chennai, now I'm a student in Kerala. I'm doing the first year in music degree course at the Music College in Thiruvananthapuram."
Soumya admitted she was amazed at the response to the song. "I had rendered that song during an interval at the college and soon it went viral. I often sing my favourite songs to trouble friends. That song was one latest 'mischief' that I played on friends. I never expected it to go so viral. Our gang spends time on music whenever free," she added.
Soumya has set high goals for her budding career. “My passion and my life is music. I long to be a well-known playback singer, and also earn a name as a classical singer. I don't have great desires. If possible I want to sing under A R Rahman.”
Soumya further revealed that composer Ilaiyaraaja was her idol.
