Kottayam: Heavy rain continued to lash the southern districts of Kerala on Wednesday, flooding low-lying areas and filling up dams. The shutters of Malampuzha dam in Palakkad were opened on Wednesday. All four shutters were opened 3 cm.
Water level in several other dams in the state are also nearing full capacity. An Orange alert was sounded at Kakki dam in Pathanamthitta after water level crossed 980.00 metre. The full reservoir level at Kakki dam is 981.46 metre. Orange alert was also issued for Idamalayar dam in Ernakulam. The current water level is 167.04 meter and when it reaches 168.5 meter, a red alert would be declared.
Districts of Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Thiruvananathapuram and Kollam were reeling under the incessant downpour. An uprooted tree fell on a railway track at Karuvatta in Alappuzha, affecting rail traffic along the route.
Schools, colleges shut
All educational institutions, including professional colleges, in Kuttanad taluk of Alappuzha will remain shut on Thursday. Institutions in other taluks which are functioning as relief camps will also remain shut. However, exams scheduled earlier will not be postponed.
