Book collection drive on to revive flood-hit libraries

Palakkad: The District Library Council is turning a new page by launching a book collection drive, named ‘Book Challenge’, to resuscitate the libraries which were ruined by the recent floods in the district.

The drive aims to revive the libraries and put in place requisite facilities for the readers. The council in a meeting held here has urged the youth organisations to be part of the programme and collect books for the libraries which are in ruins.

It is assumed that a contribution of five books from each family could help to rebuild the libraries as close to 25 lakh books were lost in the deluge across various libraries in the state.

As per the preliminary estimates, the losses in libraries have been pegged at Rs 15 crore. The estimate includes loss of books and damage to buildings and furniture. A few libraries in Thrissur, Alappuzha, Pattanamthitta, Kottayam and Ernakulam districts were washed away, and those in Kozhikode, Wayanad, Palakkad, Idukki and Kollam districts were partially damaged.

People can donate books at the Information Office at the Civil Station or at the District Library Council office on the Robinson Road. Books can also be donated during the Library Council’s cultural rally on November 3.

Council district president T K Narayanadas, secretary M Qasim and state executive committee member T K Sudhakaran addressed the meeting.
