Stuck in a rising river, a family sends out desperate plea

Kottayam: A family of five including an infant and two elders are stuck beneath a bridge as the water level rises across Kerala.

The flash flood in the river flowing beneath Parechal-Thiruvathukkal bypass overbridge has stranded the family in a makeshift tin shed.

Jobin was forced to move under the bridge along with his parents, wife and child eight months ago after their house crumbled under the impact of the piling works for the bridge.

The authorities, including Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan MLA and municipal councillor Meera Balu, had promised the family to build a new house once the bridge was finished. The family is yet to see their losses compensated despite repeated reminders and requests.

“Nobody cares about us,” said Jobin’s wife as she held on to her two-year-old son. “Can someone help us. Otherwise, we will be gone with this water.” she said. The family can do nothing other than the water level in the river rising hour after hour. They are without food. Even the child goes hungry.

To make matters more dangerous, a live wire is passing close to the bridge.
