Kakkanad, Kochi: The Indian Army, which stole hearts with brave rescue mission in the flood zones of Kerala, have wound up its operations in Ernakulam district.

Before leaving, the men of steel displayed their softer side as they visited a baby born to a pregnant woman they had rescued from the flood.

The group led by Subedar V K Naushad of Palakkad gifted a costume to the boy born to Amrutha, whom they had rushed to the hospital tearing through gushing waters.

A rescue team led by Captain Domine Prasheel of 19 Madras Regiment of the Army had rescued Amrutha, who was in labour pain, at around 2.30 pm on August 16 from Puthenvelikkara. The roads had been inundated for over a metre and her husband Sreenivasan sought the Army's help.

The Army team led by Naushad reached swiftly. Amrutha was made to lie down on an iron cot and taken in the military truck to the hospital at Kodungallur.

Sreenivasan then posted a video on WhatsApp, thanking Naushad and his team of Army personnel, but, busy as he was with rescue work, Naushad saw it only days later.

Naushad and his team visited Kodungallur MIT hospital to visit Amrutha and gift the baby with a dress before they left Ernakulam.

Apart from the Madras Regiment, 75 soldiers drawn from the 13 Battalion Garhwal Rifles had also joined the rescue efforts in Kerala. They started work from the camp at the Presentation College at Puthenvelikkara on August 14 and rescued over 6,000 people stranded at various places.
