Chennai: Malayalam actor and dubbing artist Lakshmi Krishnamurthy passed away here on Saturday. She was 90.
A native of Kozhikode, she was part of several popular as well as art house films.
Lakshmi is known for her performances in films such as Hariharan's Panchagni (1986), Shaji N Karun's Piravi (1988), G Aravindan's Vasthuhara (1991), Sathyan Anthikad's Thooval Kottaram (1996) and Kamal's Ee Puzhayum Kadannu (1996).
Lakshmi was born at Chalappuram in Kozhikode as the daughter of Chengalathu Devaki Amma and Mullassery Govindamenon. Though she wanted to become a nurse, her tastes for arts compelled her to keep aside the ambition and become an artist.
She started presenting programmes in Akashavani when she was a student of Madras Presidency College. In 1950, she joined the Kozhikode wing of Akashavani as an artsist-cum-announcer. Her husband Krishnamurthy, a native of Mysore, was an official of the Hyderabad Administrative Staff College.
Lakshmi had worked as a news reader at Delhi Akashavani and as a teacher in Madras and the US. She has also acted in some plays. Her acquaintance with veteran writer M T Vasudevan Nair landed her the role of a former freedom fighter in the cult film Panchagni.
Her younger sister Nirmala Sreenivasan is also an actor and radio artist who is known for her character in MT's 'Oru Cherupunchiri'.
Lakshmi has a daughter Sandhya and son Arun.
