Kozhikode: A BJP sympathiser, who is the main accused in the recent attack on the kin of CPM district secretary, was hacked by a gang on Saturday noon.

Sreeju Karimbanchery, 30, was attacked at Ambalakkulangara by a four-member gang who arrived in a car.

He was first taken to Taluk hospital, Kuttiady, and then to Government Medical College hospital, Kozhikode. He has reportedly received injuries on his leg, neck and head.

Kuttiady police registered a case and are investigating.

Sreeju is the prime accused in the case over attacking Julius and his wife Saniyo, a journalist, during a state-wide hartal called by the BJP on November 17.

Julius is the son of CPM Kozhikode district secretary P Mohanan.

Sreeju and two others were arrested the next day and were remanded for 14 days.

A series of attacks and counterattacks between CPM and BJP workers was reported in Kuttiady, Perambra and Nadapuram soon after this attack on the hartal day. The general strike was called by the BJP to protest the arrest of Hindu Aikyavedi leader KP Sasikala, who was heading to Sabarimala.
