Kalpetta: Former Wayanad District Congress Committee (DCC) general secretary O M George, booked for sexually abusing a tribal girl, surrendered before the police on Tuesday. George, who was also the Sulthan Bathery panchayat president, surrendered at the Mananthavady SMS DyDP office.

The Sulthan Bathery police had registered a Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) case against him based on a complaint by the Childline officials in the district.

According to the police, George had sexually abused the 17-year-old girl for nearly a year-and-a-half. George had been absconding soon after the case was registered against him on January 29. He had been hiding in Karnataka for the past one week.

The family of the teenage girl were domestic aide at George's house and on holidays the girl also used to help them. The girl's parents complained that she was abused when they were away.

George was suspended from the KPCC on January 30.

The tribal girl is under the care and protection of Childline officials.
