Kochi: Ahead of the court-ordered demolition of apartment complexes at Maradu here the parking lot of one of the marked structures has been razed. The car parking facility of the Jain Coral Cove was razed using demolition excavators.

After the Supreme Court earlier ordered for the demolition of the apartment complexes, which were built by violating the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms, preparations are underway to bring down the structures.

Mumbai-based Edifice Engineers has been tasked with the demolition of the Jain Coral Cove. Two other apartment complexes - Holy Faith H20 and Golden Kayaloram - too would be razed by the Edifice Engineers. Chennai-based Vijay Steels would bring down the two towers of the Alpha Serene.

The parking facility was adjacent to the main building of the Jain Coral Cove. Iron rods are being separated from the debris.

Works on removing the doors and windows, and breaking down the walls inside the flats are underway. The company representatives said that they would start drilling holes in the building to insert explosives on Tuesday.

Chief Secretary Tom Jose would lead the discussions on the methods of demolitions during a meet on November 11.

The buildings have to be demolished by January 9, as per the deadline submitted by the government in the Supreme Court. It would take two months to fully carry out the clearance of debris after the demolition brought about by controlled explosion that would last just a few seconds. Thirty days are needed for removal of debris and clearing of the site to normal condition. The entire set of activities will be completed in 138 days, the authorities estimate.

In all the four multi-storeyed apartment buildings have 343 flats. The properties cover an area of 68,028.71 square metres.
