Five more bird flu cases in Kerala

Kottayam: Three cases of avian influenza, more commonly known as the bird flu, has been reported from Kottayam district days after the neighbouring Alappuzha district reported the same, leading to the culling of ducks and other birds.

Samples collected from Vechur, Aymanam and Kallara panchayats were found positive for the virus during tests conducted at the 

National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) in Bhopal. The results were out on Tuesday, confirmed Kottayam District Collector Dr P K Jayashree.

The Collector convened an emergency meeting of officials and respective panchayat presidents on Tuesday afternoon to plan the control measures. 

In Alappuzha district, bird flu has been confirmed in Karuvatta and Nedimudi panchayats too. A few days ago the disease was confirmed in ducks in the nearby Thakazhi panchayat. Subsequently, culling of ducks and birds were conducted in the last few days.
