Kochi: A man tried to kill his wife by slitting her throat in broad daylight in Kalamassery here on Wednesday morning. The husband attacked the woman while she was travelling to work.

The survivor Neenu (26) has been admitted to a private hospital in critical condition. Her husband Arshal is in police custody. He surrendered to the police station following the incident. According to reports, the accused and his wife had been living apart for the past year.

"The accused continuously harassed Neenu, often causing disturbances at her residence," said councilor K T Manoj. He further mentioned that he was unaware of any previous police complaints against the accused.

"Ashal had gone to Neenu's house a couple of times and quarrelled with her. Today's incident is understood to be a continuation of the earlier fight. It was a sudden attack. He then drove away. When she screamed for help, people rushed to her rescue and took her to the hospital. There is a deep cut on her neck. After initial treatment at the Kinder Hospital, she was shifted to Amrita Hospital,” Manoj said.

The two got married eight years ago. They have a 7-year-old son together. Neenu works at a hardware shop near her house, police said. Cops said they have initiated a detailed inquiry into the incident.
