Meen Vazhayilayil Pollichathu

Ever got a chance to prepare fish in the traditional Kerala way, in a plantain leaf? There is something unique about the taste of the fish cooked in the plantain leaf, for it would have absorbed the goodness of it.

Ingredients
5-6 fish pieces, cubed
1 cup shallots, sliced
1 cup thin coconut milk
2 dsp ginger, sliced thin
1 + ½ tsp pepper
1 tsp chilli powder
Salt, as required
¼ cup coconut oil
1 tsp mustard seeds
2 tsp coriander powder
2 dsp garlic flakes
5-6 kudampuli (Malabar tamarind) pieces
3 green chillies, slit
½ + ½ tsp turmeric powder

Preparation
Take 1 tsp pepper powder, ½ tsp turmeric powder and ½ tsp salt. Mix some water and make a loose paste
Rub this paste on the fish pieces and let them stay marinated for ten minutes
In a pan, pour oil
When it heats up, drop the marinated fish pieces into it
Flip and cook both sides until soft
Once done, drain the oil and take off the pan
In the same oil, add mustard seeds
Add the sliced shallots and saute well
Drop the green chillies, garlic and ginger and keep stirring
To a bowl, pass 1 tsp chilli powder, 2 tsp coriander powder, ½ tsp turmeric powder, ½ tsp pepper powder
Mix it with some water
Now add this paste to the onions and saute well
Add kudampuli and fish pieces
Add the coconut milk to the pan
Close and cook until it is done
Take rectangular plantain leaf pieces
Put a fish piece with masala on the leaf
Wrap it covering it from all four sides
Repeat with all the fish pieces
