Yam Stem and Green Gram Thoran


A unique combination of yam stem combined with a tasty mix of ground coconut, spices and green gram, this stir fry would be a knock-out success this Onam.


1 stem of yam, minced and salted

1 cup green gram, boiled

½ coconut, scraped

2 green chillies, chopped

½ tsp jeera, lightly crushed

2 garlic pods

¼ tsp turmeric powder

2 tbsp oil

1 tsp mustard seeds

2 dried red chillies

4-5 shallots

Salt, as required


In a mixer, put in the scraped coconut, green chillies, jeera, turmeric powder and garlic pods and grind to a paste

In a pan, pour the oil

Throw in the mustard seeds and wait until they splutter

Add curry leaves and red chillies

Put in the ground coconut mix and saute well

Meanwhile, wash the minced yam, squeeze out the water and drop them in the pan

Now add the boiled green gram

Blend well, and bring the mixture to the middle of the pan

Close with the lid and let it cook until the steam escapes from the pan
