Wayanad reels under heavy rain; schools, colleges shut

Kalpetta:  Low-lying areas of Wayanad, including Vythiri and Lakkidi, are submerged in the continuous rain since Tuesday night. Almost all the connecting roads to the district have been damaged in the incessant rains.

The low-lying areas are getting flooded after all the shutters of Banasurasagar dam were opened about on Thursday, officials said.

The average rainfall in the district till 10 am on Thursday is 24 cms. One woman, Lilly (50), belonging to Lakshamveedu colony near Vythiri police station, died in the landslide in the early hours of Thursday. Five others, who were trapped under a house that collapsed, were rescued.

Authorities have opened 50 relief camps. Families from the low-lying areas are being shifted to these camps.

Vythiri, Kottappura, Kuppadithara, Kalpetta and Valad in Mananthavady are the worst-hit areas.

Traffic through Thamassery churam, Periya churam and Palchuram have been halted.

In Kozhikode, one person is missing in Kaithappoyil area of Thamarassery.

Cultivation in hilly areas like Thiruvambadi were affected due to landslips.

The Marippuzha bridge collapsed affecting traffic on the route. The nearby roads are also flooded.

Minor landslips have been reported from Muthappanpuzha, Kaimb, Maripuzha and Kavunkalel, according to disaster management cell here.

Holiday for schools, colleges

Wayanad district collector has announced holiday to all educational institutions, including professional colleges, on Thursday in view of downpour. CBSE and ICSE schools as well as anganwadis too will remain closed for the day. No change in exams scheduled for Thursday including Plus One improvement/supplementary exams.

Holiday has been announced for all educational institutions in Nilambur Taluk of Malappuram district.

Water levels have been rising in rivers and dams across the state due to the incessant rain. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has warned people to stay away from rivers and dams.
