Two faces of Left: CPM leaders supply food, clothes to Periya twin murder suspects at police station

Kasaragod
YC workers Kripesh and Sharathlal were killed in Periya of Kasaragod on February 17.

Kasaragod: Even as the CPM is claiming that the party is against politics of violence and would not provide any help (legal or otherwise) to the suspects in the twin murders of Youth Congress men at Periya in Kerala's Kasaragod district, it has come to light that the CPM leaders are supplying food and clothes to the assailants at the Bekal police station.

Seven of the eight suspects in the case were arrested and remanded in police custody at Bekal station now.

Special care is being given to prime suspect and former CPM local committee member A Peethambaran and his aide Saji George, a party worker and tile manufacturing unit owner, by three CPM leaders from Uduma area.

The accused are lodged in Bekal station except when they are called for interrogation by the Crime Branch DYSP to Kasaragod. Despite the party’s claim that the accused will not be protected, help is reaching them in many forms. Local CPM leaders chat with them at the station on a regular basis.

Eighth accused at large

The police say the eight persons are directly involved in the murders. But only seven are arrested till now.

According to sources, the eighth suspect is hiding for the past five days at a party office near the house where the seven were hiding after murders. The doors of the office, usually open all the time, were closed for several days. Local people say food is being supplied to this person from party families nearby. However, this has stopped now and people around the area believe that the person has been shifted to another safe location.

Meanwhile, Uduma block president Rajan Periya’s house was attacked in Kalliyode on Sunday. Rajan is also president of Thiyya community temple protection committee in North Malabar.

A Molotov cocktail (petrol bomb) was hurled at the house around 1.30am on Sunday. The fire that damaged the front door gutted a chair nearby. Rajan and wife Santha were in the house during the attack. On Rajan’s complaint, nine people including CPM Periya local secretary N Balakrishnan, Abdul Latif, Rateesh Chekkippallam and Sandeep Koodanam were booked by Bekal police for the attack. Rajan is the brother of DCC general secretary Balakrishnan Periya.
