Kollam: Yet another case of shoddy construction of a public institution or facility in Kerala has come to the fore.

A taluk office at Kollam, built at a cost of Rs 5.5 crore, is literally falling apart. The Kerala State Construction Corporation built the office.

Concrete on the roof has started to come off. Flaws were found on the roof of the room with the staircase. Even the walls are in a woeful state with the concrete starting to peel off.

Tiles were set on the bathrooms with very little cement, and instead, old clothes and bottles were used.

The work on the six-storeyed building was started during the tenure of the V S Achuthanandan government in 2011. However, the work was completed only during the term of the Oommen Chandy government in February 2016.

Lakhs of rupees are being shelled out every month to carry out the maintenance works to keep the office functioning.

A flyover at Palarivattom in Kochi, inaugurated in 2016, has been shut for traffic after cracks were spotted on it just three years after it was inaugurated. Built at a cost of Rs 42 crore during the tenure of the Oommen Chandy govt, it was envisaged to have a life span of 100 years. An overbridge at Pappinisseri in Kannur too has been said to have developed flaws.
