Kerala Governor refuses to accept HC notice on Kannur VC issue

Kerala Governor Arif Muhammad Khan
Arif Mohammed Khan has claimed that the notice was issued to the Chancellor and not in his name.

Kannur: Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan has insisted that he will not return as the Chancellor indicating his tiff with the state government on the controversy over the reappointment of Kannur University vice-chancellor is far from over.

The governor on Wednesday refused to accept a notice issued by the High Court of Kerala seeking clarification on the reappointment of the VC.

"Notice has been issued to the chancellor, not to Arif Mohammed Khan," he told media persons before adding that "from 8th (January) onwards, I'm not functioning as the chancellor".

The relationship between the Left Democratic Front led by Pinarayi Vijayan and the governor has been frosty since the controversy erupted recently.

Khan had said that he signed on the appointment order under pressure while Pinarayi Vijayan had questioned the governor's motives.

Claiming that his office has redirected the High Court letter to the state government like any other file, Khan said: "If I'm the chancellor I shall discharge the duties in accordance with the law and rules."
