Kerala restricts number of people attending events as Omicron cases surge

The Kerala government has decided to restrict the number of people gathering for public and private events in the wake of the rise in the number of Omicron infections in the state.

Maximum 75 people are allowed to attend events like marriage, funerals and social, political, cultural or community gatherings that take place indoor. For outdoor functions, 150 people are allowed to attend.

The restrictions were fixed at a meeting held to review the Covid situation in the state. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan chaired the meet.

The meeting decided to enhance testing at airports for passengers with symptoms of COVID-19. The health department will be publishing the treatment protocol for those who have been infected and quarantined at home.

Those who have not yet applied for the financial aid for the kin of those who succumbed to the pandemic should do so at the earliest. Officials should not delay the processing of the applications already received, the CM said.

There are 181 active cases of infection by Omicron variant of coronavirus in the state as per latest government data. Eighty per cent of the adult population has been given two doses of Covid vaccine in the state. There are 15.43 children eligible for vaccination. Of them, two per cent has already been vaccinated.

The meeting assessed that the state has adequate stock of the vaccine.
