CPM to keep Congress at arm's length but keen on pooling anti-BJP votes

CPM conventions from Sept, Kannur to host Party Congress in April

New Delhi: The CPM won't have any truck with the Congress at the national level, but it is not averse to taking measures for corralling the anti-BJP votes.

The party has now clarified its stand vis-a-vis the Congress as stated in the draft political resolution which was approved at the CPM central committee meeting held last month.

The draft, which will be taken up at the forthcoming Party Congress in Kannur, will be made public on Saturday.

On minorities

Muslim fundamentalist and extremist organisations like the Jamaat-e-Islami and the Popular Front of India and their political fronts were trying to exploit the attacks of Hindutva forces against the minorities for their vested interests, the draft warned.

The activities of such extremist organizations are only helping the Hindutva communal forces; hence, it is important for the secular and democratic forces to make efforts for protecting the rights of the minorities and rally them on the secular platform, the draft further states.

On natural disasters

The resolution has expressed concern over the flawed and ill-conceived basic infrastructure projects which are posing danger to the fragile Himalayan region. Global climate change is adversely impacting the Indian climate, it pointed out.

The floods caused by heavy rains were resulting in the large-scale destruction of crops and infrastructure. The flooding in urban areas has now become common.

The rising sea level adds to coastal erosion, thus gravely impacting the livelihood of the fisherfolk and farmers, the draft political resolution said.
