Thalassery: The police have received vital information about the assailants of former Thalassery municipal councillor 'COT' Naseer. As the probe is on it is also said that a senior CPM leader from Thalassery had issued threat to Naseer a couple of days ago. Naseer was reportedly called to the leader’s office and was told that his arms and legs would be chopped off.
A team has been formed to track down the whereabouts of three CPM members, police said, while adding professionally trained people seem to have attacked Naseer.
The suspects’ phone records are under scrutiny based on clues collected from CCTV images.
Cuts on the hands are defense wounds as he tried to block the knife aimed at his chest. The iron rod hit a key area on the head and stomach wounds are deep. Vital organs remained unaffected only because Naseer was quick on his feet. The attackers rode their bike over Naseer before fleeing.
CPM rebel leader Naseer, who is now recovering in a hospital in Kozhikode, was hacked allegedly by CPM workers on Saturday night. One bike-borne man smashed Naseer's head with an iron rod, another stabbed him in stomach and on hands with knife and a third assailant rode the bike over him, Naseer said in his statement to the cops.
The attack was to avenge leaving the party (CPM) and contesting against its leader (P Jayarajan), Naseer told cops who had registered his statement on Sunday morning.
Naseer underwent emergency surgery at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital and is still in the ICU.
Naseer was in the fray from the Vadakara Lok Sabha constituency which reportedly witnessed an intense electoral contest between Congress candidate K Muralidharan and CPM's P Jayarajan.
Jayarajan visits Naseer
Vadakara LDF candidate P Jayarajan said Naseer has not told the police that his attackers were CPM workers. He was speaking to media after visiting Naseer in hospital. Naseer also said he did not speak to KPCC president Mullappally Ramachandran, claimed Jayarajan.
CPM and Naseer have no issues between them. He was a CPM member and Thalassery municipal councillor. He chose not to renew membership over a difference of opinion on including a column for religion on the renewal form. CPM did not oust him. The attack and election do not seem related, Jayarajan clarified.
