Two govt employees suspended for SBI branch attack during strike

Thiruvananthapuram: Two NGO union members who participated in the attack on the SBI Treasury Branch here have been suspended from government service. The duo – A Asokan and TV Harilal – had ransacked the branch manager's office on the second day of the all-India strike on January 9. Both are members of the union affiliated to the CPM.

Asokan is the Thaikkad area secretary and Harilal is the district secretariat member of the union. Asokan, a clerk at district treasury office, and Harilal, an office assistant at the technical education department, had surrendered before police.

The suspension comes after the police remanded the duo under a non-bailable offence.

Thirteen others involved in the attack, including district president and a state committee member of the union, have been identified but are still at large, said the police.

Anil Kumar (civil supplies), Ajayakumar (sales tax), Biju Raj (health department) and Vinu Kumar are among the 15 accused. Cellphones of two of them have been traced to Vazhuthacaud. The police believe the CPM is shielding them.
