Thiruvananthapuram: It seems the state police is determined to drag its feet over the investigation into an assault case against the daughter of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Sudesh Kumar. A police team probing the case has submitted an interim file in the High Court saying it couldn't gather enough evidence to arrest the woman. The Crime Branch hasn't yet moved to arrest the accused even though police driver Gavaskar had complained more than a fortnight ago that the woman assaulted him.
The police is seeking more time for completing the probe, even as some efforts are on to settle the case with a compromise. Meanwhile, the police had charged a case against Gavaskar after the accused woman filed a complaint saying he assaulted her. Gavaskar approached the High Court with a plea that the case be withdrawn. The court will consider it on July 4. The investigators submitted the case file, explaining the probe so far, to the court ahead of this verdict.
The interim report says the team has not been able to collect enough evidence to prove that the woman had assaulted Gavaskar. It says more time is required to examine circumstantial evidence and statements of witnesses.
At the same time, the Crime Branch is yet to confirm that the woman's complaint was fake, though evidence has been obtained to that effect. It has sought the court's nod for collecting more evidence on her complaint too.
It has been alleged that top police officers have put pressure on the probe team to delay its work in a bid to spare the ADGP's daughter. Top cops and the investigators will take a decision on her arrest depending on how the court will react when the case is taken up next week.
