12.5 lakh power connections restored in flood-hit Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) Limited's 'operation re-connect' is making rapid strides. In the past two days, 12.5 lakh power connections have been restored in in flood-ravaged areas. Power has to be restored in 13 more houses.

The public utility has also charged 1,526 transformers in the last two days. About 4,600 remain to be recharged. And of this, at least 1,000 still remain submerged. The figures were put out in an official release issued by the KSEB.

"Workers from neighbouring states Andhra Pradesh, Telengana, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka have promised all help," the official release said. "Besides workers and contract labourers from various parts of the state have come to flood-affected regions to offer help," the release said.

Workers and equipment from other states have already started pouring in. A 30-member team from Andhra Pradesh is at the moment involved in power restoration work in Irinjalakuda and Thrissur districts. As many as 125 distribution transformers have come from Tamil Nadu. The state has promised 240 distribution transformers and 50,000 single phase meters. The private sector is also pitching in.

Various electrical companies have assured the supply of necessary materials and equipment. L&T has promised to take over the power restoration work in 500 houses. Karnataka's Hubli Electrical Company will provide 100 transformers. 50 have already reached Madakkathara in Kochi. Power Grid Corporation of India Limited will offer 50 kilolitres of transformer oil. Besides, PGCIL will also provide three trucks to transport these transformers and also disk insulators and low tension panels.

A 24x7 control room has been opened at the KSEB headquarters in the capital to oversee the restoration work.
